What's Up in Core?

Week of 9/18/2017:

Word Work: Students have been studying their new words and learning about the various patterns in the English language. As always, there will be a test on Friday.

Writing: We are currently in the middle of our narrative unit. Students are working on adding descriptive details to their writing (sensory details, show-not-tell, figurative language). I've been so impressed with the work I've seen so far! This week we will begin drafting a personal narrative.

Reading: We are diving deep into the wonderful book, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. We are focusing on tracking characters and finding textual evidence to support our thinking. Reading assessments are taking place as well.

Social Studies: Evolve or Die! This is our early humans unit that we have just started. Students will be learning all about Australopithecus and Homo Habilis this week using the textbook and video, "Walking with Cavemen." Later, students will conduct further research and eventually write a children's book that will be given to elementary aged students.

Membean: We are continuing our 15 minutes of practice with a quiz on Friday.

Grammar: We are learning how to navigate our grammar website, NoRedInk. Next week students will create their NoRedInk "Action Plan" to see what they need to work on.

Welcome to Room 72!

I am so excited to begin the 2017-2018 school year on Tuesday, August 22nd!  I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of my students and learning about what makes him/her unique.  I also look forward to meeting parents at Back to School Night on Thursday, August 24th. We are going to have a fantastic year in Room 72!

Please note that the students should have an independent reading book to bring to school by Thursday, August 24th.

On this site, students will be able to access homework, grades, and upcoming assignments.  Students are recommended to use the Core Planner provided by the class as a resource for keeping track of daily assignments.  They may also use their own daily planner if they prefer.

Parents:  Please explore School Loop with your child.  If you have not created a School Loop account for yourself, I highly recommend you do so. Then, please download (from the locker on the left) and return the following documents by Friday, August 25th.

- Getting to Know Your Child (if you prefer to answer this questionnaire via Google Forms, please click here. If you choose this option, there is no need for your student to print and bring this to class).

- Home Contact Information (if you prefer to submit this via Google Forms, please click here. If you choose this option, there is no need for your student to print and bring to class).

- Room 72 Class Rules

- Video Permission Slip
